Altron Window Relay DIY

Altron Window Relay DIY
by LateAPXR    (Difficulty:  Easy)
Est. time needed: 15-20 minutes

Here's a DIY for the infamous Altron window relay kit. Depending on which kit you buy you will now have the ability for One Touch Up/Down operation of either the all four windows or just the front two from the driver's switch panel ONLY. This does not give the functionality to the passengers... JUST the driver. But then again... control is good right?

Materials & Tools Needed

Small flathead (jeweler's works best)
Medium Philips Screwdriver
Large Flathead Screwdriver (optional)

The Procedure

Preparation:

1. Open the package containing your new Window Relay Kit.  Check the contents to ensure you have, 1-Wiring Harness, 1-Relay Module, and 1-Foam Pad.

2. Peel the backing off of the Foam Pad, and carefully wrap it around the Relay Module.  This will cushion the module after the installation, so that it doesn’t rattle around the inside of your door.

Installation:

1. Using the Med. Phillips screwdriver remove the screws holding the door panel to the door. There are a total of 9:
One behind the door latch, two on the bottom, two on the latching side, two on the side which meets the dash panel edge and two below the arm rest (the two screws under the arm rest and the two screws on the latching side are hidden by covers, use your small flathead to pry them up to gain access).

2. Remove the small triangle plastic piece that covers the side mirror bolts by prying it off with your small flathead, it just clips on.

3. Remove the door panel by prying at the bottom either with your hands or the large flathead. Start at one edge and work your way around to the opposite end. It should easily "pop" up in 2 locations. Then just lift at and angle and place the panel somewhere safe. Watch out for the clips on the bottom as they can be tricky, I broke one of mine.

4. Unplug the existing wiring harness from the back of the switch assembly. The Altron relay essentially acts as a "middle man" and will be placed between the switch assembly and the wiring harness that comes from the door.

5. Plug the wiring harness into the Altron relay and then plug the Altron relay into the switch assembly.

Optional Steps

If you'd like the windows to automatically close once the key has been removed a few more steps are involved but are quite simple. I did not do this but you may want to.

a. Follow the wiring diagram in the pics below to configure the relay for this operation. This extra wire provides power after the car has been shut off.

b. After completing the previous steps (1-5) run the red power wire through the door by way of the existing wiring harness and through the grommet. This will lead into the cabin.

c. From there using the modified fuse connector end of the power wire, plug it in place of the existing defroster 30A fuse.

6. Installation of the door panel is the reverse of it's removal. Just go backwards.

Tip:  When placing the panel on the door frame it's easiest to be patient and slide it down at an angle starting at the top nearest the window moulding. Sometimes it can be tricky getting it on correctly but once you do you'll know. Then just pop it back into place, screw everything back in and you're done.

Congratulations. You now are an owner one of a few Elantras in this country that have One Touch Auto Up & Down windows!  - Tim
