DIY Project 60

Headlight Flash with Alarm Arm/Disarm
by southpawboston

This DIY adds a low beam headlight flash in addition to the four-way hazard flash when the alarm is armed/disarmed/triggered. The headlights flash in perfect sync with the hazards. To do this DIY, first view and print out the DIY "Tapping into the ETACS". The ETACS module is a central module that controls the Elantra's alarm, central locking, and lighting systems.

Disclaimer: I have not personally tested this modification. I am providing this information to Elantra GT Club members as a reference to try AT YOUR OWN RISK. I can not guarantee that this modification will work, and I am not liable for any damage to your car as a result of this mod.  With that disclaimer out of the way, I hope you find this mod useful! (If it comforts you at all, I was a professional installer, and did this mod many times. It is a very common mod, and the relay setup is tried and true. I have simply "custom-tailored" it specifically to the Elantra to make it easy for anyone to do themselves).

Materials and tools needed:

·     standard automotive SPDT relays (2)
·     20-gauge or similar electrical wire
·     insulated female spade crimp terminals (8)
·     crimping tool
·     electrical tape
·     solder
·     solder gun
·     wire strippers
·     phillips head screwdriver
·     10mm socket/socket drive
·     self-tapping sheet metal screws (2)

Difficulty: medium

Total cost: $10-15

Procedure:

1)  Disconnect the battery.

2)  Following the "Tapping into the ETACS" DIY, remove the dash fascia,
CD deck, and HVAC controls. Unplug wiring harnesses "A" and "C" from
the ETACS.

3)  Remove the three screws securing the upper shroud and lower shroud
from the steering column and remove the shrouds. The steering wheel
does not need to be removed. Unplug connector M01-2 (refer to the
figure below).

4)  At the bench, make a home-made "harness" consisting of two relays
according to the diagram. Pre-wiring the relays and making a harness at
the bench will aid in installation. Try to use color-coordinated wires
when wiring up the harness, since the colors in the diagram have been
matched to the colors of the wires that you will need to splice into.
Use insulated female spade crimp terminals to connect to the spades of
the relays, and bundle the wires neatly with electrical tape. Leave at
least three feet of wire extending from each spade to allow running the
wires to the various connectors.

5)  Mount the two relays on the metal dash support to the right of the
ETACS. There are two pre-drilled holes that can be used to secure the
relays with self-tapping sheet metal screws. The mounting position of
the relays will not interfere with the reassembly of the CD deck and
HVAC controls.

6)  Splice the pre-wired relays into the two ETACS connectors wires,
and into the steering column switch connector wire on the bottom of the
steering column stalk switch as shown in the diagram.

7)  Cut the Red/Bluefrom pin 9 of connector I/P-B, which is located on
the front of the passenger compartment fuse box, and splice the two cut

ends into the pre-wired relay setup as shown in the diagram. Be careful
to attach the proper side of the cut wire to the proper spade!Refer to
the figure below. You may or may not need to remove the lower crash
panel to get access to this wire (you may be able to access it behind
the coin bin). If you need to remove the crash panel, remove the screws
and bolts holding the lower crash pad panel. The figure also shows only
the screw/bolt locations, it does not show the positions of the clips
holding the side panel and crash panel. These clips hold the panels
tightly. You need to tug on the panels to pop them free. There are
three clips holding the side panel, and two clips holding the top edge
of the crash panel.

8)  After the splice junctions are properly soldered and taped, secure
any loose wiring to existing wiring harness using electrical tape.

9)  Re-assemble the CD deck, HVAC controls, dash fascia and steering
column shroud. Re-assemble the crash pad if necessary. Reconnect the
battery.
