Fog Lights Part 2: removes parking light "on" requirement
by southpawboston
On the previous page, DIY "Fog Lights Part I" eliminated the need
for the low beams to be on to use the fogs, by relocating the relay coil ground from the low beam switch to chassis ground.
This DIY takes that modification one step further, and eliminates the need for the parking lights to be on, by switching the
+12V source from fuse 6 to fuse 20, which is hot when the ignition switch is "on". This way, the fogs will work completely
independently of the parking lights and headlights, and are only dependent on the ignition switch being "on".
This way the fogs can be used like daytime running lights, and will still switch off with the ignition. Check your local
laws to make sure use of the fog lights is legal in this manner.
( Note: This DIY is an extension of Part 1 and requires
Part 1 to be done in order to work.)
Materials and tools needed:
· 18-gauge or similar electrical wire, about
1 foot total
· electrical tape
· solder
·
solder gun
· wire strippers
· phillips head screwdriver
·
10mm socket/socket drive
Procedure:
1) Disconnect the battery.
2) Gain access to the passenger compartment fuse box by removing
the
screws and bolts holding the lower crash pad panel. Remove lower crash
pad panel and the bracket holding it. The
figure shows the steering
wheel removed; you do not have to do this. The figure also shows only
the screw/bolt locations,
it does not show the positions of the clips
holding the side panel and crash panel. These clips hold the panels
tightly.
You need to tug on the panels to pop them free. There are
three clips holding the side panel, and two clips holding the
top edge
of the crash panel.
3) Cut the orange wirefrom pin 2 of connector I/P-G, which
is located
on the rear of the passenger compartment fuse box. Refer to the figure
below. It may be easier to locate
and cut the wire if the connector is
unplugged from the fuse block.
4) Splice the end of the cut orange wire that was removed
from the
connector into the red/blue wireattached to pin 9 of connector I/P-B,
located on the front of the fuse box.
Tape the end of the connector
side of the cut wire.
5) After the splice junction is properly soldered and taped,
secure
any loose wiring to an existing wiring harness using electrical tape.
6) Reassemble the steering column shroud. Reconnect the battery.
