DIY Project 59

Fog lights Pt. 1: Removing the low beam "on" requirement (difficulty - medium)
by southpawboston  (photos by elantrick)

The factory fog lights on the '01-'04 Elantra are wired in such that they only come on when two criteria are met: the parking lights are on and the low beams are on. They will not work with only the parking lights on, or with the parking lights and the high beams on. The way this works is that the fog light relay coil gets ground when the head light switch is in the low beam position, while getting +12V from fuse 6, which is only active when the parking lights are on. This DIY for eliminates the need for the low beams to be on to use the fogs, by relocating the relay coil ground signal from the low beam switch to chassis ground. This way, the fogs will work as long as the parking lights are on, and independently of the low beams or high beams. Check your local laws to make sure use of the fog lights is legal in this manner.

Materials and tools needed:

solder - solder iron - electrical tape - wire strippers - phillips head screwdriver

Procedure:

1)  Disconnect the battery.

2)  Remove the three screws securing the upper shroud and lower shroud from the steering column and remove the shrouds (refer to the photo below). The steering wheel does not need to be removed.

3)  Cut the blue wirefrom pin 13 of connector M01-2, which is located on the bottom left side of the multi-function switch. Cut the wire as far away from the connector as possible. The diagram shows the connector as seen from the bottom.

4)  Splice the connector side of the cut wire to the black wire coming from pin 17 of connector M01-2. Tape the other end of the cut wire.

5)  Solder and tape the splice junction, and secure any loose wire to the existing wiring harness with electrical tape.

6)  Reassemble the shrouds. Reconnect the battery.
