DIY Project 58

Wiring the Elantra Sunroof to "Key-Out" Mode
by southpawboston

The 2001-2004 Elantras with factory alarm/keyless entry have a feature which allows the windows to be operated during a 30-second "key-out" mode after the key has been removed from the ignition switch. The optional sunroof on these cars do not have such a feature, but it follows that the sunroof should also be able to be operated during this mode.  This DIY modification re-routes the sunroof motor relay signal source to the same "key-out mode" circuit that controls the power window relay, thus allowing the sunroof to be operated in that mode.

Disclaimer: I have not personally tested this modification since I don't have a sunroof. I am providing this information to Elantra GT Club members as a reference to try AT YOUR OWN RISK. I can not guarantee that this modification will work, and I am not liable for any damage to your car as a result of this mod.  With that disclaimer out of the way, I hope you find this mod useful!

Materials and tools needed:

· standard automotive SPDT relay, 30A
· insulated female spade crimp terminals (4)
· 20-gauge or similar electrical wire, about 2 feet total
· electrical tape
· crimp tool
· solder
· solder gun
· nylon snap tie

Note: Most of these materials are available at auto parts stores and at Radio Shack.

The Project:

(Total cost:  $5-10  Difficulty: easy/med.)

1) Disconnect the battery.

2) Wire up a relay at the bench according to the diagram. Use insulated female spade crimp terminals to attach the wires to the relay. Leave about 1 foot of wire extending from each spade on the relay. Pre-wiring the relay with color-coordinated wire as shown in the diagram will make the installation easier.

3) Splice the red and gray relay wires into the red and gray wires coming out of pins 6 and 12, respectively, of connector I/P-F, located on the BACK of the passenger compartment fuse box. The fuse box can be accessed from underneath the driver's side of the dash. You may need to unplug the connector to get better access to it for splicing.

4) Locate the pink wire at pin 4 of connector I/P-C on the FRONT of the passenger compartment fuse box. Cut the wire as close to the connector as possible (the pin will no longer be used), and splice the end of the cut wire removed from pin 4 onto the pink wire coming from the relay.

5) After all splice junctions are properly soldered and taped, secure the relay to an existing wiring harnesses with a nylon snap tie.

6) Reconnect battery.
