One of the things I disliked most about my Elantra GT, was the console
gear indicator that Hyundai installed on the GT, I found it cheap looking and just not in line with the rest of the interior
quality. Since we have the gear indicator display on the dash, I decided it was time to cover up the console
gear indicator with a leather boot. It looks a lot nicer (I think) and certainly adds to the sport factor for me,
considering I had to buy automatic to suit the needs of my wife...hehehe. It took about 20 minutes to do and the boot
I bought is made of black leather by Alpena. The one I purchased has an elastic bottom that worked great to hold
it securely the base of the gear indicator console.
Cost was $27.00 CDN.
Items required:
1 Leather Boot
1 Philips Screwdriver
1 Medium Coffee....lol
1 oz. of patience ;-)
Here's how to do it:
1) Move the gear selector down to the Low gear position and
remove the two small Philips screws on the gear shift knob. Even though the leather on the shift knob overlaps the screws
a little, they should come loose so you can remove the shift knob, but they probably won't come all the way out. Carefully
remove the shift knob of the post. Make sure you hold the button into the handle, so the button and spring do not fly
out on you. Also note the position of the push pin in the post so when you re-install the shift knob, you are lined
up properly.
2) Remove all six screws on the center console (4 in the front,
2 in the rear) and raise the handbrake lever to the uppermost position. Lift the rear of the console and slide the unit
toward the rear of the car until you clear the handle of the handbrake. Once over the handbrake, you can fully remove
the center console and put it aside.
3) Take your leather boot and slide it over the post and position
evenly around the gear indicator. This is where the elastic bottom on the boot comes in handy, as it ensures that the
boot stays where you positioned it.
4) Take your center console and slide it back into position,
check the position of your leather boot, and fastened the screws when ready. Take your shift knob, push the
button in, and line it up with the push pin in the post and tighten the screws.
