The stock dash on the Elantra GT is laid out very well and is quite functional. Unfortunately it
is also fairly bland. With a mostly dark gray interior the black dash looks too utilitarian. To me, the ideal way to enhance
the dash is with a dash kit.
Hyundai does have an optional wood look dash available but I'm not sure that's really in keeping
with the GT's sporty personality! On the other hand the Hyundai wood dash is a true molded dash, unlike the aftermarket
dashes which are the "glue on" type. So you decide.
I've researched the dash kit aftermarket and have come to the conclusion that you get what you pay
for. Prices range from about $100 to upwards of $400! That's quite a range isn't it? There are a wide range of real wood veneer,
real carbon fiber, and tons of synthetic finishes out there. For my money, brushed aluminum or carbon fiber are the best fit
for the GT. Two of the top manufacturers of the kits are B&I Trim and Sherwood Dash.
The "glue on" kits are essentially a thin veneer of material coated with either epoxy or polyurethane
and backed with a high quality double sided tape. Supposedly, polyurethane gives better protection against UV Rays than
epoxy so look for that. Also, the better kits features lifetime guarantees against peeling off.
The dash kit material softens when warm (a hair dryer is ideal) and allows it to follow and mold
to the curved surfaces of the dash. Make sure the dash is warm (but not hot), too! Once applied the kit stiffens up
and gives the illusion of a "molded" dash. The key to getting a good looking finished product is careful pre-cleaning
and slow and deliberate application of the dash pieces. Clean especially well if you've previously applied any
silcone products like Armorall.
Once applied the dash can be maintained with furniture polish applied with a soft rag.
