DIY Project #4

More Air, More Horsepower
by JPJR   (difficulty level: medium)

Hyundai put a lot of extra effort to keep this engine quiet and smooth. But to do that, they lost a few horsepower. If you dont mind a little noise(not too loud), you can get that horsepower back. This engine responds much better to intake modifications than exhaust mods, so this is a good place to start. A K&N panel filter will work great with this modification also and added at the same time.

1. Loosen hose clamps, remove screws and take top of air box off- part#28111. Turn the top (part# 28111) upside down and locate the intake tube(were the top connects to part #1471UD). This is actually two pieces, a tube (part of the box) and a smaller tube (located inside the first). If you pull, this smaller tube will slide out, making the outlet size on the air box top bigger, letting more air to the throttle body.

2. Remove filter from bottom of box. Remove bolts on bottom of air box. Lift (part# 28112) and remove airbox to fender tube(part# 2820). This will bypass the long restrictive journey throught the fender resonator(part# 2821OF) and let your engine breath easier. Some people prefer to keep the fender tube in place(part# 2820) and remove the fender resonator (part# 2821OF) instead. This could help bring in colder air from the fender well, but requires a lot more work.

These mods have been used by other Hyundai users with good results. It adds a little more noise, but it's not that loud and doesn't seem to bother most. A lot of people actually like the sound. - JPJR
